What you’ll learn

  • Choosing jig head and weight
  • Adding a trailer
  • Bottom contact
  • Hopping and swimming
  • Feeling bites in cover

Where it fits

When jig fishing makes sense

  • Along rock, wood, docks and weed edges
  • When you want a bait to spend time close to bottom
  • In openings where a compact profile can pass through cover

No technique works every time, and catches are never guaranteed.

How to fish it

Step by step

  1. Step 1

Select a jig for the cover

Choose a head shape and weed guard suited to the bottom: some move through rock better, while others slip through vegetation. Match jig weight to depth, wind and the fall rate you want.

  2. Step 2

    Add a straight trailer

Thread a soft-plastic trailer onto the hook so it sits in line with the skirt. Check that the trailer does not block the hook gap or twist the jig.

  3. Step 3

    Cast and follow the fall

Place the jig beside a target and let it sink on controlled slack. Watch for the line stopping early, jumping or moving sideways before the jig reaches bottom.

  4. Step 4

    Keep contact

Slowly drag or make short hops, letting the jig settle after each move. Feel for changes from hard to soft bottom and pause beside cover.

  5. Step 5

    Try a swim retrieve

To cover a weed edge or open lane, retrieve the jig steadily just above cover. Vary speed or let it fall briefly when you pass a likely holding spot.

  6. Step 6

    Set and clear

When you feel a tap or unexpected weight, reel down and lift firmly. Keep the fish moving away from nearby cover, then check the hook and line for damage.

Common mistakes

  • Using a jig head that wedges repeatedly in the bottom being fished.
  • Rigging a trailer off-center so the bait rolls.
  • Missing bites on the initial fall or dragging too quickly past cover.

Practical adjustments

  • Change weight before abandoning a productive piece of cover if you cannot feel bottom.
  • Trim or change a bulky trailer if the jig needs to fall faster or fit a small opening.
  • Feel the bottom’s texture; a sudden change can be worth another cast.

The gear you need

Build your setup

A starting checklist: rod and reel suited to jig weight and cover, line, skirted jig, soft-plastic trailer, optional landing net. Match tackle to the bait, conditions and local regulations.
