Technique guide

Finesse

Use small baits, lighter tackle and controlled movement when a subtle presentation makes sense.

General fishing guidance; TJ’s personal approach, gear and technique-specific photos will be added after his review.

What you’ll learn

  • Selecting a small jighead
  • Light-line setup
  • Ned rig basics
  • Slow retrieves
  • Landing fish with light tackle
Finesse soft-plastic bait setup

Where it fits

When finesse makes sense

  • When fish are present but not responding to larger or faster baits
  • Around rock, sparse vegetation and open-bottom transitions
  • When a small bait can stay in the target area

No technique works every time, and catches are never guaranteed.

How to fish it

Step by step

  1. Step 1

    Match the tackle

Choose a spinning setup that casts the small bait comfortably. Set the drag so a fish can take line before the light leader or hook is overloaded.

  2. Step 2

    Rig a small plastic

Thread a compact plastic straight onto a suitable jighead for a Ned-style presentation, or choose another finesse hook for the cover. Keep the hook point clear enough to work.

  3. Step 3

    Cast and follow the fall

Cast to a rock edge, transition or opening. Watch the line while the bait sinks and take up slack once it reaches the intended depth.

  4. Step 4

    Move it minimally

Try a slow drag, a small hop, a pause or a controlled swim. Keep contact without constantly lifting the bait out of the target zone.

  5. Step 5

    Change one variable

If there is no response, alter pause length, weight, bait size or casting angle one at a time. Notice whether bites come while the bait moves or rests.

  6. Step 6

    Land patiently

Reel into the bite and maintain steady pressure. Let the drag work rather than forcing a fish on light line; inspect the leader after rubbing rocks or cover.

Common mistakes

  • Setting the drag too tight for a light leader.
  • Overworking a small bait when a longer pause is needed.
  • Using a jighead that is too heavy to maintain the intended slow fall.

Practical adjustments

  • Check the knot and the last few feet of line frequently.
  • Use a lighter head only when you can still track the lure and control the line.
  • A different casting angle can change how the bait crosses rock or weeds.

The gear you need

Build your setup

A starting checklist: light or medium-light spinning rod, spinning reel, main line and leader, small jighead or finesse hook, compact soft plastic. Match tackle to the bait, conditions and local regulations.
